During the summer of 2023 took part in a residency at the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts on the island of Skopelos in the Aegean Sea. While there, I immersed myself in the culture, landscape, and stories of this ancient land. This series of monoprints incorporates the historic vessel shapes inspired by Rodios pottery of Skopelos. The golden threads weave together stories found in Greek mythology.

In Spring of 2023, I worked in the studio of Hugo Anaya in Guanajuato, Mexico. Using found materials gathered there, I created these monoprints reflecting the colors and textures of this vibrant city.

For “We Are All Vessels”, photographs of ancient vessels were printed on the inside surface of present-day food boxes using the process of cyanotype and then reconstructed inside out. Each work notes the vessel’s age and culture of origin as well as the type of food box used, offering a commentary on our disposable culture.
The Modern Vessels monoprint collection is inspired by the iconic shapes found in these vessels.
Photographs of ancient vessels were printed on the inside surface of present-day food boxes using the process of cyanotype and then reconstructed inside out. A total of 80 boxes have been created.

Cyanotype is a 170 year old photographic printing process that produces prints in a distinctive dark greenish-blue. The word cyan comes from the Greek, meaning “dark blue substance.” Ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide are combined, and exposure to UV light creates ferric ferrocyanide, also known as Prussian Blue.
I have used this process in a variety of ways. For a straight cyanotype, objects or transparencies are placed on dried treated paper and exposed to the sun for 10-20 minutes. For “Wet Cyanotypes” I used local plants on treated paper that is wet and has various additives such as vinegar, turmeric, salt and soap bubbles. These are exposed to the sun for 4-12 hours and the image “cooks” with often surprising results. I love working in concert with the time of day, the intensity of the sun, the season, and the plant.

As 2020 drew to a close , it appeared that there was light at the end of the long dark pandemic tunnel. This gave rise to the Luna series: mixed media pieces that begin with a black ground and develop from dark to light. Using hand printing as well as on-press printing and embellished with gold and silver stitching, each piece incorporates an image of the moon, signifying the renewing cycles of our collective experience.
